Belinda is a professional writer, editor, and entrepreneur from Cairns, Australia. She spends her time enjoying Indie music and movies, binge-watching TV series, sewing words together, taking macro photos of creepy crawlies and plants, and pointing out what’s wrong with other people’s work. She also takes care of her young daughter single-handedly while studying and running her businesses.
Now, onto the long version where I no longer speak in third person.
I was born in Cairns and now live one hour away. It was good enough for me, so now I’m raising my daughter here as well. The majority of my childhood was spent living in a shed my dad built. That part of my life included a lot of different animals and adventures amongst the trees. Just like the shed, my dad built on our 5-acre block of rainforest a timber cubby house, swimming pool, and the house we eventually moved into.
I started spending time on the internet when it was in the early stages of becoming the household norm (before that we did have an Amstrad computer for gaming and a Sega Master System). After spending so much time playing Boulder Dash and Hang On, the introduction of the internet was a dream. From my mid-teens I started building crude Geo-cities websites in Netscape Navigator, spending time in chatrooms with people on the other side of the world, and learning that they didn’t have the same pop culture references as me, let alone spell the same way!
After finishing High School, I went on to complete a Diploma in Travel & Tourism and went to work for a
conveyancing Solicitor. I eventually enrolled in a Bachelor of Business and Journalism but after a number of changes in major, I graduated with a Bachelor of Business in 2012. I’m now working towards a joint degree in Accounting and Financial Planning mainly because that’s the field my jobs have always been in. I’m also studying a Cert IV in Professional Writing and Editing along with website development, social media management, and professional blogging.
My childhood was pretty extraordinary. I had parents who supported me and gave me experiences and things that other kids could only dream of. This is why I want to build a freedom lifestyle. I want to give my daughter the same things I was able to have, and other things I wasn’t able to. I want to be a mum who is able to participate in her life. The thing is, it’s just me. I have no partner to support me financially. So, I’m doing it all myself. I plan on building businesses I enjoy working in but with the flexibility to spend time with her at school. Or whisk her away on a school holiday trip somewhere.
The problem is, as you can probably tell, my interests are wildly varied. It’s not easy for me to focus on one idea and run with it. This has made sitting down and starting a business seemingly undoable. It has been overwhelming to come up with one thing I have to do for the rest of my life.
Then, I had a revelation – I can do more than one thing! Maybe not simultaneously, but my career can be as diverse as my experience and passions.
Every time I’ve searched for inspiration on the internet about people who have made their dream lifestyle a reality I have been left deflated. Don’t they all seem extraordinary? I mean, there’s no hope of me doing it when it seems only people with superpowers, or the luxury of money, can do it.
I want to prove myself wrong and I want to show you that you can do it!
This website is about making things easier for you. Here I’m going to share the knowledge I’m gaining, my experience setting up businesses, and how I’m building my freedom lifestyle. You’ll get to learn from my mistakes and share in my successes.
